Helmet or treat?
Young bicyclists in the Greater Sayville area can expect to get one or the other this Saturday afternoon — depending what, if anything, they’re wearing on their heads.
Sayville’s Community Ambulance Company and Suffolk County Police will be driving around the streets of Bayport, Bohemia, Oakdale, Sayville and West Sayville from 2-4 p.m., handing out either free bike helmets or free Carvel ice cream cone coupons to children riding bikes, skateboards and roller blades.
Children seen wearing safety gear (including a helmet) or carrying out a good deed on their wheels will be given an ice cream cone voucher. Kids not properly equipped with safety gear will get a free bike helmet, along with safety educational material.
The “Community Safety Surge” program is an injury prevention initiative to reward positive safe behavior in children. Authorities will target areas near parks, schools, train station parking lots, ball fields and town beaches.
Also participating are the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, MTA Police, Youth Enrichment Services, New York State Parks Police, county Legislator William Lindsay III, state Sen. Phil Boyle and state Assemblyman Andrew Garbarino.
