Sayville missing its iconic clock after hit-and-run wreck

|

Sayville is just not the same without it.

The corner of Main Street and Railroad Avenue in Sayville has been missing its beloved clock for weeks — following a hit and run wreck that nearly dislodged the clockhead from the green post.

Video surveillance footage shows a Ryder rental truck strike the post at 8:30 a.m. on July 30, and then drive off, local business people said. Days before Sayville Summerfest earlier this month, Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce President Eileen Tyznar noticed the iconic clockhead was tilted.

For safety precautions — fearing the clock head may fall to the sidewalk or street — she had the head separated from the post for safety precautions.

“It was all cracked, and six out of the eight bolts that hold the clock head were gone,” Tyznar said. “It looked like it was going to fall. It was a few days before Summerfest (Aug. 10-11), and I was afraid the clock would either fall on people or one of the classic cars in the car show.”

Cafe Joelle owner James Caporuscio wanted to feature the clock on his new menu. But it was when he stepped out of his restaurant to snap a photo of the Main Street icon that he noticed the clockhead was missing.

Tyznar said the clockhead is now stored at a Town of Islip warehouse somewhere in Bay Shore. She said Suffolk County Police are investigating the wreck that caused the clock damage, and that she is uncertain when the clock will be repaired.

The Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce issued a statement saying it is has made “it a priority to have the clock fixed and restored as quickly as possible.”

“This is our iconic symbol and our logo for the Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce,” she said. “Main Street is just not the same without it.”
