GreaterSayville Supermoms – three entrepreneurs inspired by their children

|

One survived a bout with breast cancer while pregnant to open a retail shop in Oakdale. Another created a health food business to address her child’s life-threatening food allergies. And a third started her own do-it-yourself woodworking business after rehabbing an old dresser with her 3-year-old daughter.

Together, they are the three entrepreneur supermoms featured in GreaterSayville stories over the last month.

Mayra Robayo: Owner of Precise Gluten Free Food in Sayville

At first, the Sayville mother of three wanted only to develop recipes for allergen-free meals her whole family could enjoy, an action necessitated by her youngest child’s diagnosis with life-threatening food allergies four years ago.

Then her friends and neighbors started to rave about her recipes, so she grew more ambitious and started Precise Gluten Free Food, a healthy and delicious assortment of pancake, cookie and muffin mixes. Robayo’s products are sold at Cornucopia and Fancy Nancy Country Store in Sayville, the new Fresh Food Supermarket in Oakdale and Sherry’s Market in Babylon. You can also find them on Amazon and on the Precise GF website.

Sandra Bernius: Owner of Hammer & Stain in Bayport

The owner of Long Island’s first Hammer & Stain — a group DIY studio with 70 locations across the country —found her new career path two years ago after she purchased a second-hand dresser, and refinished and personalized it for her daughter Sadie, 3.

“I loved the woodworking aspect. I loved refinishing. I loved giving life into new things — and then being able to personalize it with her colors, her name,” Bernius said.

“Things just kind of evolved from there,” she added.

Kim Dasch: Owner of Rescued Treasures in Oakdale

After surviving breast cancer while pregnant with her second child, Dasch traded her bus matron position for entrepreneurship. Earlier this month, Dasch hosted a grand opening event at her high-end thrift and consignment shop.

Her friends and relatives at the event raved about how inspiring Dasch has been to them. Dasch, 35, has a daughter Kielley, 5, and a son Gunnison, 2.
