Sayville business community set to bring bike-share program to hamlet

|

The Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce intends to bring a bike-share program to the hamlet, the chamber announced this week.

The program could be in place as soon as the fall if the chamber gets Islip Town or Suffolk County to buy in to the idea, chamber President Eileen Tyznar said.

Bike-share programs make bicycles available for shared use to individuals on a short term basis. Sayville stations would be located at the railroad station, somewhere on Main St. and at the Sayville Ferry. Other spots being explored include the Long Island Maritime Museum in West Sayville, Loughlin Vineyards and Sayville Marina Park Beach.

“We’re looking for new ways to have more people shop, wine and dine in Sayville and West Sayville, and enjoy our community,” said Tyznar, who included in that group Manhattanites who get off the train and typically head straight to the Sayville Ferry in an Uber or taxi.

“The bicycles would bring people out into the community, instead of just viewing the community from their cars,” she added.

Sayville’s announcement comes the same week that county officials announced bike-sharing systems will roll out next month in Patchogue and Babylon. That plan involves users having the ability to download a bike-share app and being able to pay per ride or buy a membership.
