Shucking the day away in West Sayville

|
Claws Seafood Market Crab Shack & Clam BarĀ and Blue Island Oyster Co. served up more than 1,100 shucked oysters Saturday during a special event aimed at raising awarenessĀ on the importance of protecting the Great South Bay.
Locals lined up from 2-6 p.m. for $1 shucked local oysters and $10 beer bucketsĀ at ā€œProtect the Bay, Oyster Day,ā€ hosted by Claws.
“Not including Christmas or the seafood festival we do every year, yesterday was the biggest day for Claws since we opened six years ago,” said Frank Palermo, owner ofĀ the seafood market and eatery on Montauk Highway in West Sayville.
Palermo spent the day carting trays of locally raised oysters out to the shucking table, where Blue Island’s Chris Quartuccio shucked away as customers licked their chops in anticipation.
GreaterSayville.com was there to slurp down a few dozen briny bivalves and catch some of the fun. Check it out.
