Claws Seafood Market Crab Shack & Clam Bar and Blue Island Oyster Co. served up more than 1,100 shucked oysters Saturday during a special event aimed at raising awareness on the importance of protecting the Great South Bay.
Locals lined up from 2-6 p.m. for $1 shucked local oysters and $10 beer buckets at “Protect the Bay, Oyster Day,” hosted by Claws.
“Not including Christmas or the seafood festival we do every year, yesterday was the biggest day for Claws since we opened six years ago,” said Frank Palermo, owner of the seafood market and eatery on Montauk Highway in West Sayville.
Palermo spent the day carting trays of locally raised oysters out to the shucking table, where Blue Island’s Chris Quartuccio shucked away as customers licked their chops in anticipation.
GreaterSayville.com was there to slurp down a few dozen briny bivalves and catch some of the fun. Check it out.
