The long wait for a grocery store in Oakdale’s Lighthouse Commons shopping center finally is over.

Fresh Food Supermarket opens its doors at 7 a.m. Friday (June 7) , following a grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday evening.

“The people in this community are hungry for this place,” said the owner Jose Colon, who has managed supermarkets for 25 years. “We are going to cater to the community.

“We’ve been working for this day seven days a week since January,” added Colon, before cutting the ceremonial red ribbon with his wife Lucia and three of their children by his side.

With 25,000 square feet of space, Fresh Food features a produce area with a farmers market feel, a full bakery, a wide organic selection, and fresh meat and seafood areas.

“This guy knows his business,” said Colon’s landlord, Lighthouse Commons owner Anthony Dalto. “He’s created a miracle over here.”

Lighthouse Commons on Montauk Highway has been without a supermarket for three years, since Best Yet Market moved to a location nearby on Sunrise Highway. It’s also home to the CM Performing Arts Center and the Oakdale Brew House, which opens this month.
