Sayville and Connetquot baseball teams each win Suffolk championships

|

Neighboring school districts Sayville and Connetquot will both play for Long Island championships in baseball on Saturday after securing Suffolk County crowns this week.

Connetquot’s Jared Yalon drove in four runs and starting pitcher Matt Brown-Eiring picked up the win in the T-birds’ decisive road victory over Ward Melville today for the Class AA championship.

Connetquot won the best-of-three series, which included the T-birds comeback win Monday in Game 2. In Tuesday’s game, Connetquot jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning and led 13-1 after five innings.

Sayville won its first county championship on Monday, handling Rocky Point 8-3. They will face the Nassau Class A champs in the Long Island title game Saturday at 7 p.m. at SUNY Old Westbury.

Connetquot plays Nassau Class AA champs Massapequa in the Long Island title game on Saturday.

“We wanted to simplify our approach, take simple swings and (hit) line drives,” Yalon told Axcess Baseball LI.

Connetquot’s star pitcher Joey Savino told Axcess Baseball LI that the team is “just getting started.”

“After losing last year in the semi-final, we knew that this is where we want to be,” said Savino, a senior who will likely pitch on Saturday and is expected to be drafted high in Major League Baseball’s draft this month.

Axcess baseball was there to capture the final out in Sayville baseball’s historical win on Monday.
