20 Photos: Sun shines on Sayville Farmers Market kickoff

|

Fancy Nancy’s Country Store brought the honey and soap. Sweet Melissa Dips showed up with purple asparagus. And Pickle Packin’ Papa’s Joy Glass seemed to have enough pickles for everyone in town.

The fare at opening day of The Sayville Farmers Market’s 2019 season paired perfectly with what seemed like the first sunny and warm day of spring — the temperature reached 72 degrees — last Saturday.

“I was still worried about the weather — until I woke this morning and saw the sun,” said Ann Phagen, owner of Ann’s Garden in Babylon, lamenting this year’s soaky spring.

The market, featuring more than 15 vendors from across Long Island, attracted hundreds of locals to The Islip Grange, located on the northeast corner of Broadway Avenue and Montauk Highway.

Through October — and maybe even until Thanksgiving — the market will be open each Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. Rain or shine.

“It could be pouring rain, and you’d still see a line of people waiting to buy pickles from Pickle Packin’ Papa’s booth,” said Terry Maccarone, market sponsor of the Sayville Farmers Market, noting the determination of patrons who have come to the market over the years.
