Blue Point couple is healthy and coming home after a month under coronavirus quarantine

A newlywed Blue Point couple who spent a month under coronavirus quarantine — two weeks on a cruise docked in Japan and two weeks at an Air Force base in Northern California — is finally on their way home.

Guy Cerullo confirmed that he and his wife Milena Basso were aboard a plane this evening after health officials approved their release from Travis Air Force Base. They were among about 140 quarantined Americans from the Diamond Princess cruise ship released from the base after showing no symptoms, health officials confirmed.

The status of another Blue Point couple who were passengers on the ship is unclear.

“Mentally exhausted,” Guy Cerullo said via Facebook, describing how he and his wife were feeling.

It’s been two months since the Cerullos felt the salty air of Long Island’s South Shore. Guy Cerullo, a 2010 Patchogue-Medford graduate, and Milena, a native of Garden City wed in November. They had been scheduled last month to close on the purchase of their new home in Blue Point.

Just after the holidays, they flew to Asia and embarked on a month-long cruise for their honeymoon. On the final day of the cruise, they learned that they and the more than 3,700 passengers and crew on board the cruise ship would be quarantined and stuck on the ship for two weeks.

A man who’d been on the Diamond Princess tested positive for the coronavirus on Feb. 1, six days after leaving the ship in Hong Kong. Three days later, the ship docked at Yokohama, Japan, and hasn’t left the country since.

Before all of the passengers and crew members had left the ship, more than 700 had tested positive for the coronavirus. On Feb. 16, the Cerullos were among more than 300 Americans — 14 of whom tested positive for the coronavirus — evacuated from the ship by United States officials.
